Westchester Writers You Should Know

Thanks to a generous gift from Tarrytown poet, Linda Ashear, we start a new series of readings devoted to writers in our midst whom we salute not only for the quality of their work but for their commitment to Westchester's literary life.

photo: Usha AkellaUsha Akella of White Plains has had a book of poems published in India (... Kali Dances. So Do I...) and some of her poems are due to be published in Catamaran Magazine. She is the founder of the Poetry Caravan, funded in part by Poets & Writers, and plans to publish an anthology of the Poetry Caravan poets in early 2005. She won the 2004 Greenburgh Supporter of the Arts Award.

photo: Sally BliumisSally Bliumis of Armonk teaches Fiction Writing and Modern Poetry Analysis at SUNY Purchase. Her poems have been published in The Paris Review, Prairie Schooner, Poetry London, Rattapallax, and Nimrod, among others. She was a finalist for The Pablo Neruda Prize in 2002. She is a frequent attendee at readings here and elsewhere in the area.

photo: Nancy KrimNancy Krim of Ardsley-on-Hudson spent 23 years teaching English at Scarsdale High School, and she continues to teach writing workshops in which both children and adults are helped to find their own writing voices. Settings for the latter have included schools and teachers' centers, national conferences, and a battered women’s shelter. A long-time poet, she has had poems and other work published in Prairie Schooner, Kenyon Review, and a variety of other journals. She has occasionally introduced writers at our readings.

All readings include a question & answer period and a reception with books by the author(s) for sale.
