From his years at Sports Illustrated through more than a dozen books such as Roy Blount's Book of Southern Humor, the novel First Hubby, Not Exactly What I Had in Mind, What Men Don't Tell Women, One Fell Soup (Or, I'm Just a Bug on the Windshield of Life), Crackers and About Three Bricks Shy of a Load, Roy Blount Jr. has made us laugh.
He also collects songs about food, is in a rock band with Stephen King, Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver, Dave Barry and others, and his most recent works are photo books about dogs (created with Valerie Shaff), a history of Robert E. Lee, and a sometimes-dark memoir about his mother. The man is full of surprises, and April 26 should offer more.
It's likely he'll read at least a bit from Be Sweet: A Conditional Love Story, the memoir. "My mother loved me to pieces, as she often said, and I'm still trying to pick up the pieces." The boy from Georgia tells his life story, and the result has won him even more admirers. Help us welcome this treasure of American humor.
