photo: Stephen DobynsStephen Dobyns is one of those rare writers who excels in a remarkable variety of genres. He has published eleven books of poetry, twenty novels (including a series of ten mysteries set in Saratoga Springs), a collection of short stories (Eating Naked), and a book of essays on poetry (Best Words, Best Order). His most recent novels are Boy in the Water and The Church of Dead Girls and his latest poetry collection is The Porcupine's Kisses. His new poetry collection, Mystery, So Long, will be published by Penguin next spring.

His first book of poetry won the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1972, his fifth was a winner in the National Poetry Series, and his sixth won the Poetry Society of America's Melville Cane Award in 1987. His work has been included several times in both Best American Poetry and Best American Short Stories. Two of his novels have been made into films and two more are under option, and his novels have been translated into twenty languages. Other awards include Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, Pushcart Prizes, and prizes from Poetry and The American Poetry Review.

He has taught at more than a dozen colleges and universities including the University of Iowa, Warren Wilson College, Syracuse University, Emerson College, and Sarah Lawrence.
