This
reading made possible
His first book of poetry won the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1972, his fifth was a winner in the National Poetry Series, and his sixth won the Poetry Society of America's Melville Cane Award in 1987. His work has been included several times in both Best American Poetry and Best American Short Stories. Two of his novels have been made into films and two more are under option, and his novels have been translated into twenty languages. Other awards include Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, Pushcart Prizes, and prizes from Poetry and The American Poetry Review. He has taught at more than a dozen colleges and universities including the University of Iowa, Warren Wilson College, Syracuse University, Emerson College, and Sarah Lawrence.
