midnight, a cry—
half cat-snarl,
half child-shriek.
To calm myself,
I name it—black-crowned night heron,
picture it, wandering
in
the dark of another's sleep,
then static
in the marsh moonlight,
seconds before it tenses,
plunges its bill into placid water.
