WORDS PLUS
Setting Jean Craighead George's Work to Music

photo: Jean Craighead George and Chris KubieAlmost everyone knows the work of Chappaqua’s Jean Craighead George—including the Newbery Medal book, Julie of the Wolves, and My Side of the Mountain, Frightful's Mountain, How to Talk to Your Dog, and many, many more. But most don't know that she is a lover not only of words, animals and the natural world, but of all the arts—including dance and music.

So no wonder that she and composer Chris Kubie of Brewster are thoroughly enjoying their recent collaborations. These include an environmental musical One Day in the Woods; another musical based on Julie of the Wolves (performed last spring at the Museum of Natural History and headed, they hope, to Broadway); and a just-released work, One Day in the Tropical Rain Forest, in which George narrates a story accompanied by a Kubie score incorporating the sounds of the rain forest.

What a special treat to have the two of them present a special “words plus” program for all ages at the Writers’ Center! Reservations recommended: 914-332-5953.

All readings include a question & answer period and a reception with books by the author(s) for sale.

Suggested Donation: $5 ($3 for HVWC members and those under age 18; maximum $10 per family of up to four people.)

The readings at the HVWC are made possible in part by a grant from the Bydale Foundation; the David G. Taft Foundation; the Orchard Foundation; and the Thendara Foundation; with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency; and by Westchester Arts Council with funds from Westchester County Government, corporations and individuals.
