The Ties
That Bind: A Family Series
The
ability to read and write has not always been considered a basic human
right, and songs have often filled in when pen and paper were denied or
considered too dangerous. The songs of the Underground Railroad were lifesavers
for slaves and abolitionists, a critical means of passing messages and
keeping the metaphorical railroad running. Kim and Reggie Harris, former
Philadelphians who now live in upstate NY, have for years been delighting
audiences from the Kennedy Center to the International Children's Festival
with music of their own and by others, and we welcome them here at our
station. |
