Writing: A Family Business

photo: Sheila Kohlerphoto: Sasha TroyanWhat does it mean to share the “family business” of writing? Sheila Kohler of NYC, Sasha Troyan of Montclair, New Jersey, and Porter Shreve of West Lafayette, Indiana, should know. Troyan is Kohler’s daughter and Shreve is son of novelist and children’s author Susan Shreve, who is also a long-time friend of Kohler’s.

Kohler’s most recent novel is Crossways (Ontario Review Press, 2004) and she has written four other novels, including the dark and haunting Cracks and Children of Pithiviers, and three story collections. Troyan’s second novel, The Forgotten Island, published by Bloomsbury/Tin House in 2004 follows Angels in the Morning (Permanent Press, 2003). Porter Shreve has followed up his 2000 debut novel, The Obituary Writer, with Drives Like a Dream (2005), both published by Houghton Mifflin. Susan Shreve has written both adult and children's fiction, publishing over twelve titles in both categories. Her latest, A Student of Living Things, is a thriller just published by Viking Penguin.

Whether you are, or are not, the child or parent of a writer, you’ll enjoy hearing these writers share their work and their family stories.
