WRITING
AGUINALDOS: A Holiday Workshop Get ready for our happy Las Christmas celebration on December 14 by writing verses for the aguinaldos to be sung at that event. You don't need to speak Spanish or be Christian to participate in this workshop. The passion Eddie Rosa feels for the preservation of the traditional literary and musical forms of his culture—and his delight in sharing them—will make you a feel like an insider, no matter what your own traditions are. The workshop will focus on aguinaldos that use the espinela-like poetic structure but use six syllables per line instead of eight. It will also cover some of the musical rhythms used to accompany this type of poem in Puerto Rico. Attendees will create their own aguinaldos and try to sing some of them utilizing melodies from jibaro music.
This workshop and Las Christmas (December 14) are being offered free to all thanks to a grant from the Village of Sleepy Hollow and a Municipal Challenge Grant from Westchester Arts Council funded by Westchester County Government, Verizon, and Fuji Photofilm USA Inc.
