HVWC Guest Instructor

photo: Laura Shaine CunninghamWhat a treat to have the multi-talented Laura Shaine Cunningham back at the HVWC—this time as an instructor as well as a reader. She is the author of seven books and many plays. Her first memoir, Sleeping Arrangements, first published in The New Yorker, has since become an American classic and has completed 15 printings in its current Penguin reprint. Her second, A Place in the Country, also published in The New Yorker, was a NY Times Notable Book. Her critically acclaimed 2002 novel, Beautiful Bodies, leads a dual life as a novel and a play, and her suspenseful 2003 novel, Dreams of Rescue, is just out in paperback.

She has had an equally successful life as a playwright, and Plays by Laura Shaine Cunningham (containing Bang, Beautiful Bodies and Cruising Close to Crazy) came out last fall. Her many awards include two NEA fellowships and two NYFA fellowships in both literature and theatre.

Her next novel The House of Special Purpose, is based on the life of Maria Romanov, daughter of the last Tsar, but she admits that even her historical fiction is also somewhat autobiographical. You'll enjoy hearing her explain why.
