Writing from Grief

photo: Rebecca McClanahanPoet and essayist Rebecca McClanahan of NYC, a teacher at the HVWC for four years, and poet Gail Peck of Charlotte, NC, will talk about writing from, and about, grief. Peck will talk briefly about grief, read from an essay called “Crafting the Poem of Grief,” and illustrate with poems by her and others. McClanahan will read from her essay, “Children Writing Grief,” that includes the poems of children with whom she has worked as a writer-in-the-schools. This could be particularly helpful to teachers and parents.

McClanahan has published four volumes of poetry, three books about writing, and a collection of personal essays, The Riddle Song and Other Rememberings. Her work has appeared in The Best American Essays and The Best American Poetry, Georgia Review, Gettysburg Review, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere. Her many awards include a 2003 New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship.

All readings include a question & answer period and a reception with books by the author(s) for sale.
