A
collaboration with the Neuberger
Museum of Art, located on the campus of Purchase College,
State University of New York, presenting literary events inspired
by the Museum's exhibitions.

| WriteMind
Workshop |
|
 A
narrative technique-based approach to creative writing for teachers
and students of grades 4 through 12, developed by David Surface
in conjunction with The Hudson Valley Writers' Center. WriteMind
Workshop is based on the observation that teachers of writing can
gain new insights by thinking and working like writers. The results
of working with the narrative technique method are that:
- Teachers
discover a new set of tools for stimulating their students to
write more expressively.
- Teachers
and students practice the art of creative revision and learn to
see revision as an exciting part of the creative process.
WriteMind Workshop
consists of one component for teachers and a second component for
students. Teachers' workshops take place at the Writers' Center;
students' workshops take place at the schools of the teacher/workshop
members. Teachers and students from the Tarrytown schools, Ossining
schools, and elsewhere have already benefited from WriteMind Workshop.
The combination
of the teacher/student component of the Workshop is really interesting
and effective. It's rare that a teacher gets a chance to actually
engage in a student activity before the student tries it. As a
writer, I was challenged by the techniques and brought a special
empathy to my students when it was their turn to write. —Anne

Holiday Celebration |

This
popular annual event started at the Writers' Center
in 2002 and quickly outgrew the space, expanding to Warner Library
in 2004 and then to John Paulding Elementary School in Tarrytown.
Writer Esmeralda
Santiago, author of When I Was Puerto Rican, Almost
a Woman, The Turkish Lover, A Doll for Navidades, and
several anthologies including Las Christmas, is our host
for the event, which includes stories, songs, dancing, and traditional
foods, with a mix of Spanish and English being spoken. Audience
members of all ages are encouraged to bring their own holiday stories
to share in either language.
