photo: Micah PerksMicah Perks is the acclaimed author of the novel We Are Gathered Here, and, most recently, her memoir Pagan Time: An American Childhood. Called "breakneck . . . a vigorous, dead-on portrait" by Publishers Weekly, Pagan Time recounts the magic and heartbreak of growing up in a 1960's wilderness commune among artists and drug users, visionaries and madmen. In elegantly spare prose, Perks tenderly and relentlessly explores her conflicted relationship with the places and people of her childhood and offers fresh and first-hand insight into an era of spiritual revelation and cultural revolution. She now lives in Santa Cruz and teaches at the University of California.

photo: Galaxy CrazeGalaxy Craze of Amherst, MA, and New York City, likewise tells the story of a sixties upbringing in her best-selling debut novel By the Shore, which was described as "an ageless coming of age story" by Seattle Weekly. Craze's skillfully crafted narrator is May, a twelve-year-old girl who lives with her single mother in a struggling seaside English bed-and-breakfast. May is poised on the threshold of childhood and maturity and she gives us an exceptionally clear-sighted view in both directions. By the Shore possesses a mastery of language and story that few first novels do, "and the tension," says the New York Times Book Review, "is so palpable you'd think you were reading a thriller."
