Poetry Caravan
Sunday, April 3rd, 2005, 3:00 pm

The Poetry Caravan was founded in 2003 by Usha Akella to provide free poetry readings and writing workshops to people who might not ordinarily have access to such opportunities. Since October 2003, the Poetry Caravan has done more than 75 readings and about 10 workshops in nursing homes, senior centers, women's shelters, and health care facilities.

An anthology entitled en(compass) has just been published by Yuganta Press, with an introduction by Billy Collins. The book is a collection of poems from 32 poets who have participated in the caravan, including Patricia Smith, Margo Stever, Pramila Venkateswaran, and Ralph Nazareth, as well as a selection of poetry from workshop participants.

On Sunday, April 3rd (3 pm) at the Writers' Center, join Usha and some of the other poets who volunteer with the Caravan and are included in the anthology in celebrating its publication.

Admission is free, but donations to support the Caravan's work in underserved communities are welcomed. Refreshments will be served.
