The Ties That Bind: A Family Series

The Hudson Valley Writers' Center presents stories with
Laura Simms
Sunday, March 3rd, 2pm

Fall under the spell of mythic and true stories told with the myriad voices and moods by a great storyteller. This concert celebrates the most important topic of our time: the power of gentleness, humor, and an awakened heart to bring peace to our lives and our world. It includes the fabulous Russian fairy tale of the prince who played the harp that needs no harper, the powerful South African story of a girl and her necklace, the enchanting true life tale of Grandma Ida's diamond earrings, and other stories from Turkey, India, Romania, Israel, and Afghanistan. Child heroes and heroines abound, while giants and monsters are defeated.

Laura Simms' performances of traditional and true-life tales are both deeply meaningful and wonderfully entertaining. She recently appeared in the International Theater Festival in Romania; the Belfast International Children's Theater Festival; the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro, TN; and A Traveling Jewish Theater in San Francisco. She teaches at the University of Milwaukee and The Naropa Institute and for the past two decades has directed the foremost Storytelling Residency in the US. She is also an award-winning recording artist, essayist, and author, and in 1999 won the Sesame Street Sunny Days Award for her contribution to children of the world. Her book of adult fairy tales, The Robe of Love, will be published next fall.
