photo: David SurfaceWriter David Surface has led fiction workshops for The Hudson Valley Writers' Center for the past 15 years. On Friday evening, February 27, he and one of his Saturday morning students, Tom Mellana, will share their work in a special reading at the Center.

David Surface was awarded a 2005 Fellowship in Non Fiction Literature from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), and was also nominated for the NYFA Prize. He has twice been nominated for the Pushcart Prize in fiction. His essays and stories have been published in a wide variety of photo: Tom Mellanaprint and on-line journals, including DoubleTake, North American Review, Crazyhorse, Fiction and Slow Trains, and his essays about the craft of fiction writing have been featured in the National Writers Union Magazine and Teachers & Writers Guide to William Carlos Williams. David is a founder of WriteMind, a creative language arts program for teachers and students of grades 4 - 12, and he is leader of The F*E*G*S Writing Project which conducts writing workshops in mental health facilities throughout New York City. He has worked as a writer-in-the-schools for the Lincoln Center Department of Education, designing and implementing innovative writing curriculum for Intermediate Schools in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. David has also taught as a Visiting Writer at Wooster College, the University of Kentucky, and the Urban High School for the Humanities.

Tom Mellana is the editorial page editor of The Advocate and Greenwich Time newspapers in Fairfield County, Conn. He’s been a print journalist for 20 years. Born in Woodcliff Lake, N.J., he’s lived in Tarrytown for the last five years with his wife, Suzanne, and The Cat — and enough comic books to drive both wife and cat insane.

The reading will be followed by a Q&A period with David and Tom.
