book cover: My Subway RideChildren come often to watch them fly by the HVWC, so we know how much trains delight youngsters. This program features My Subway Ride, a brand new book by Paul DuBois Jacobs and Jennifer Swender of Brooklyn; Chugga-Chugga Cho-Choo by Kevin Lewis, train songs by David Bernz of Beacon; Raleigh D'Adamo, the designer of the original MTA map, and a few uniformed conductors from the MTA, and other special train-related guests.

photo: David BernzThose who attended the Pete Seeger concerts at the HVWC a few years ago will remember Jacobs and Bernz who performed with Seeger. Jacobs has co-authored four books with Seeger and now he and his wife have their own book to share (as well as the forthcoming A Children's Songbag). Jacobs is also a poet whose work has appeared in Poetry, Black Warrior Review, Third Coast, The Southeast Review, and Tikkun among other journals. He has been a finalist in The National Poetry Series, The Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition, and the Beatrice Hawley Award. Swender is a veteran elementary school teacher and curriculum developer who has taught in both the NYC and Houston public schools, and most recently, as a head teacher at Brooklyn College's Lab School. Her fiction writing has earned awards from Glimmer Train Press and a work-in-progress grant from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

All readings include a question & answer period and a reception with books by the author(s) for sale.

Suggested Donation: $5 ($3 for HVWC members and those under age 18)
Maximum $10 per family

The readings at the HVWC are made possible in part by a grant from the Bydale Foundation; the David G. Taft Foundation; the Orchard Foundation; and the Thendara Foundation; with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency; and by Westchester Arts Council with funds from Westchester County Government, corporations and individuals.
