PEARL KARRER
Weathering

1993, 32 pages

"Pearl Karrer is a poet who makes connections, whose sense of life is deeply metaphoric. It has been a joy for me to come across her manuscript."
—Denise Levertov

Signing Checks

The backs of his hands
pulse under papery skin
streaked with white hairs
that move up his forearms
to ripple with each
flex of muscle, stronger,
stronger as the legs

atrophy. He sits
at his kitchen table,
coffee rings branding
junk mail on one side, bills
spilling across the other.

Arthritis knobs his knuckles,
forcing a slow motion grip.
The pen grooves into yellowed
calluses while his fingers
fight for the trembles of his name.
