Words Without Borders

book cover: Literature from the "Axis of Evil"“Not knowing what the rest of the world is thinking and writing is both dangerous and boring,” says Alane Mason, the founding editor of the on-line magazine for international literature, Words Without Borders (WWB, www.wordswithoutborders.org), a partner of PEN American Center and hosted by Bard College.

Be among the first to hear readings from WWB’s about-to-be-released anthology, Literature from the “Axis of Evil” and Other Enemy Nations, with one of its editors, Samantha Schnee, and two translators. This is WWB’s first print anthology and it includes 35 works of fiction from Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, Sudan, “and other countries from whom the government would rather we didn’t hear.” Thanks to WWB and other advocates of translation, in 2005 the U. S. relaxed some of the regulations and penalties (including stiff fines and potential jail time) that made access to this literature very difficult. Come enjoy—and learn from—the fruits of their important labor.

All readings include a question & answer period and a reception with books by the author(s) for sale.

Suggested Donation: $5 ($3 for HVWC members and those under age 18)
