WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Who Am I Now: Owning the Role of Narrator in Creative Nonfiction with Susanne Paola Antonetta via Zoom

June 12, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Free – $124.00

Whether you are writing a book-length memoir or a work of flash nonfiction, when you write creative nonfiction you become that magical being–both author of the story and actor within it. We will discuss how narrative presence is built through multiple, sometimes conflicting, voices. We’ll examine different ways of inhabiting your writing, artful use of second and third person in addition to the “I,” and more. Reading will include works by James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, Ira Sukrungruang, Judith Kitchen, and Bernard Cooper. We’ll also do extensive writing together to explore the effect of different narrative choices.

Please note: This class will be taught on Zoom. The Altman Person of Color Scholarships and the need-based scholarships are free and given on a first come, first served basis—no more than one every other month. Please notify us right away if your plans change and you cannot attend the class. We will then reopen the slot so another student may register. Please refer to our Scholarships page before registering for Person of Color Scholarship or Need Based Scholarship. Thank you in advance for this consideration.

Susanne Paola Antonetta is a professor of English at Western Washington University and the editor-in-chief of the Bellingham Review. Awards for her books Body Toxic, A Mind Apart, Curious Atoms, and Make Me a Mother include a New York Times Notable Book, an American Book Award, one of Amazon’s Top Ten Memoirs of the Year, and many others. Her popular book on the craft of creative nonfiction, Tell It Slant: Writing and Shaping Creative Nonfiction was co-authored with Brenda Miller and is now in its third edition.
