WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Heavy as a Feather: Harnessing the Power of the Image with Angela Narcisco Torres (via Zoom)

July 30, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Seamus Heaney said that in poems, small things can bear the weight of anything. In this craft class we will explore the power of the image to do heavy lifting in poems, i.e., embodying the complex thoughts and emotions surrounding human experience, whether in one’s interior life or in the world. We will look closely at how some master poets have employed the image and find strategies for our own work.

This class will be taught online using Zoom. Login instructions will be emailed on the day before the workshop. Please check spam/promotions filters or email [email protected] with questions.

Please make sure to read our course policies page regarding workshop conduct and logistics before registering for any class at HVWC. Scholarship information will be available for this class in April and applications are due on May 15, 2022.

Angela Narciso Torres is the author of What Happens Is Neither (Four Way Books), To the Bone (Sundress Publications), and Blood Orange (Willow Books). Recent work appears or is forthcoming in POETRYPoetry Northwest, and Prairie Schooner. A graduate of Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers and Harvard Graduate School of Education, she received First Prize in the Yeats Poetry Prize (W.B. Yeats Society of New York). Born in Brooklyn and raised in Manila, she currently resides in San Diego. She serves as a senior and reviews editor for RHINO Poetry.
