WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

The Ekphrastic Moment: Pictures Out of Words with Sharon Dolin (via Zoom)
January 15 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm$124.00
This one-day intensive will be held on Sunday, January 15, 12:30-4:30 PM EST via Zoom.
With images being central to so much poetry, visual art, the sister art to poetry, provides a rich storehouse of imagery for our poems. Using one reproduction or a series of reproductions, in this hands-on workshop, we try out different approaches to creating the ekphrastic moment in our writing. Please bring at least one reproduction of a piece of visual art (or else a small series by the same artist) that you want to engage with for this workshop. The aim is to generate drafts of one or more poems.
Sharon Dolin is the author of seven poetry books, most recently: Imperfect Present, Manual for Living, Whirlwind, and Burn and Dodge, winner of the AWP Donald Hall Prize in Poetry, a prose memoir entitled Hitchcock Blonde, as well as two books she translated from Catalan by Gemma Gorga. She has been awarded a 2021 NEA in Translation, the Malinda A. Markham Translation Prize, and the Witter Bynner Fellowship from the Library of Congress, selected by Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey. Her book of translations, Late to the House of Words: Selected Poems by Gemma Gorga, was shortlisted for the 2022 Griffin Poetry Prize. Sharon Dolin lives in New York City where she is Associate Editor of Barrow Street Press and directs Writing About Art in Barcelona, a creative writing workshop.
