WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

The Dream Archetype Meets the Hero’s Journey: A Craft Talk and Writing Experience with Tzivia Gover and Lori Soderlind via Zoom

April 24 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Carl Jung gave us dream archetypes as character models; Joseph Campbell outlined the “Hero’s Journey.” Put the two ideas together and you’ve got a new way to examine your own fiction or nonfiction writing.  Of course, we don’t want our stories to be formulaic or our characters to resemble stereotypes. But by holding our narratives up to the light of Jung and Campbell’s insights, we can discover pathways to deeper character development, more resonant conflicts, and more vivid and meaningful resolutions. Participants in this craft talk will learn about dream archetypes and how they do or don’t match up with characters in their own work, then put their characters into stops along the “hero’s (and heroine’s)  journey” to help frame a story or narrative poem. We will explore the ideas presented by putting them into practice. Participants will write from prompts, engage in discussion, and have the opportunity to share ideas and writing.

NB: This is a craft class and not a workshop. It is capped at 25 students. It will take place via Zoom. Zoom link instructions will be emailed at the time of registration and again the day of the class. Please check spam filter and email [email protected] with questions. Please note: Scholarship applications for this class are due on February 15th. Please read our course policies page before registering for any HVWC class and please see our scholarship page for details on how to apply for a need-based or person of color scholarship.
