WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

In Edition: Writing, Editing, and Printing a Group Anthology with Maureen Cummins (in person at HVWC)

September 16 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$330.00

website maker In this six-week class, students will work with prompts from the instructor to create a communal body of work—both poetry and prose—for a limited-edition chapbook. The instructor will begin by sharing her collection of handmade artist’s books, zines and chapbooks. From there, students will be introduced to every aspect of the bookmaking process, including creative writing, design, typography, hand bookbinding, and materials. Handouts will be given on Book Anatomy, Terminology, History of the Book, and Suppliers. Throughout the six weeks, students will be pushed to practice all aspects of the writing craft—conceptualization, free-writing, proofreading, editing, reading aloud, and offering constructive, writer-centered feedback.

Each student will leave with an edition of ten handprinted, handbound chapbooks.
Registration is $330 (which includes a $10 materials fee).

This class will take place IN PERSON AT HVWC on 6 Friday evenings. The times vary slightly, and one week is skipped to allow for production time, so please take note:
The first session, September 16, will meet 5:15 – 7:15pm.
The next 4 sessions sessions (September 23, September 30, October 7, and October 14) will meet 5:30 – 7:30pm.
The final session will take place on October 28 from 6-8pm during which time we will bind the books.

Covid policies: Students will be asked to show at their vaccine card / Excelsior Pass. Whether masks will be required will be up to the prevailing health guidance at the time of class. In a small class, students will be able to socially distance so masks may be optional. We will be in touch with registrants about this as the class date approaches.

A graduate of Cooper Union, Maureen Cummins has cranked presses from California to the Eastern Arctic and produced over forty limited-edition artist’s books. Known for work centered around social justice, she has produced projects based on subject matter as diverse as the Salem witch trials, the Triangle factory fire, gay love letters from the turn-of-the-twentieth-century, the gendered history of lobotomies, and the Newark riots. She was recently one of five artists brought onto the Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary project, working with Syrian and Iraqi refugees to tell their stories. Cummins currently lives and works in Mt. Tremper, NY.
