WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Sweet World: A Generative Poetry Workshop for Young LGBTQIA+ and Nonbinary Writers with Dustin Brookshire (via Zoom)

June 22 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

We’ll start our workshop with participants sharing a poem they love written by another poet. Each person that shares will be asked to identify 2-3 reasons why the poem makes their favorites list. (Please have a link to the poem ready to share with the group, and please test that link prior to the workshop. Then we’ll transition into writing new poems based on prompts provided by the instructor. The prompts will be based on poems by contemporary LGBTQIA+ and/or bada$$ women poets. Participants will have the option to share their drafts.

Note: This workshop is a scholarship opportunity ideal for LGBTQIA+ and nonbinary poets that are high school juniors and seniors as well as poets in an undergrad creative writing program. Thanks to, instructor, Dustin Brookshire for his generousity for sponsoring this class.

Dustin Brookshire (he/him) is the author of the chapbooks Never Picked First For Playtime (Harbor Editions, 2023), Love Most Of You Too (Harbor Editions, 2021), and To The One Who Raped Me (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2012). His poetry has been featured on NPR and other radio stations, in Georgia Poetry in the Parks, in the Best American Poetry Blog, and earned him Pushcart and Best of the Net nominations. He’s the co-editor of Let Me Say This: A Dolly Parton Poetry Anthology (Madville Publishing, 2023) and editor of the forthcoming chapbook anthology When I Was Straight.
