Monday Night Poetry Joan Kwon Glass (via Zoom)

April 22 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Monday Night Poetry with Joan Kwon Glass: The World Has Ended Many Times: Writing Poems In the Wake of Trauma & Tragedy

In her book SALT, Nayyirah Waheed writes: “I don’t pay attention to the / world ending. / it has ended for me / many times / and began again in the morning.” For those of us who have experienced trauma, we have, in fact, felt like we have lived different lives–one in the before and one in the after. What happens when the world ends and life goes on? How can we write poems about the traumas in our lives while also developing a distinct voice? What role does “truth” play in our narratives? And how can specific poetic forms help us to write about difficult subjects? In this six-session, generative workshop, we will read poems by writers like John Murillo, Nick Flynn, Eugenia Leigh, Cathy Linh Che, Anne Sexton, Franny Choi, Luna Rey Hall and many others, and write news poems inspired by our readings. There will be time during each class to share our work, but most of our class time will be generative in nature.

This six week class series meeting on six consecutive Monday nights, April 22 – June 4, will be taught on Zoom and will be capped at 15 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. It will arrive immediately after registration so please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. It will also be sent the day before class as a reminder. Please review the course policies page before registering for any classes. Please email [email protected] with any questions.

All HVWC scholarship applications will be available on Dec 1 and will be due on Dec 15 for all winter/spring 2024 classes.
