WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

A Neurodiverse Poetry Workshop with Lily Akerman (via Zoom)

September 10, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Poetry is a sensory experience of language.  It subverts the idea of typicality in its very form.  It welcomes — even requires — neurodivergent thinking, in order to be written.  This Neurodiverse Poetry Workshop has two aims: to explore poetry and to build a neurodiverse poetry community.  Together we will engage in a rigorous exploration of poetry.  We will read poems by published poets; talk about them; and respond to writing prompts, generating some new poems of our own.  No prior poetry experience is necessary.

The workshop will be oriented toward neurodiverse writers.  Anyone is welcome, including (but not limited to) non-speaking typers and anyone who spells to communicate.  Speaking participants should be prepared to slow down sometimes and move at the pace of the non-speaking participants.  Wherever possible, I will accommodate the students’ individual needs.

Lily Akerman is a writer and teacher. She has taught and assistant taught at SUNY Purchase and Hunter College. Her plays have appeared at 59E59, in the Dublin Fringe Festival, Cork Midsummer Festival, Dixon Place, and on the Playing-On-Air Podcast. She has written several opera libretti, two of which have been nominated for Best Opera by the Irish Times. Her play Hedgehog Years was a winner of Playing-On-Air’s 2018 James Stevenson Prize. Her play Hippo was a Finalist for the Leah Ryan Prize, and it won the Rita Goldberg Play Award at Hunter College. She is the recipient of commissions from the Hearth, the Irish Arts Council, and Cork Opera House. She was a Fulbright Awardee to Ireland, as a librettist. Her aphorisms have been published in two aphorism anthologies: Short Flights, and Short Circuits (Schaffner Press). Lily received her AB with honors in Comparative Literature, with Certificates in Theatre and Creative Writing, from Princeton University. She received her MFA in Playwriting from Hunter College, where she studied under Annie Baker and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
