The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

The Gate: On Openings in Fiction with Victoria Redel (via Zoom)

November 18, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

$130.00

The opening sentence. The opening paragraph. The opening chapter. They are each a a gift the writer gives herself, less a roadmap for the story/novel than a wonderful rich mound of material to unpack, root around in that will yield imagery, language and the heart of the story. This workshop will help writers explore voice, diction, point of view as it impacts on the opening of story. We’ll look closely at a wide variety of opening sentences and paragraphs in fictions to tease out what the writer has promised to the reader. Writers will, hopefully, play around, go deep and come away from the class with the start to a story or three.

NB: This class will be taught on Zoom and will be capped at 15 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. It will arrive immediately after registration so please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. It will also be sent the day before class as a reminder. Please review the course policies page before registering for any classes. Please email ask @writerscenter.org with any questions.

The scholarship application for the Altman Person of Color Scholarships, Limp Wrist LGBTQIA+ Scholarships, and the Need-Based Scholarships will be available on May 1st and will be due on May 15thfor all summer and fall classes.
