WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Down The Rabbit Hole— Getting Lost in Research (Two-Day Intensive)
June 29-30
9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Grades 6-8

No matter what genre, writers research in order to understand their topics and characters thoroughly. But who said research has to be boring? Students will choose their genre, setting, characters, and conflict and dive deep into what makes these aspects of their stories click. Students will understand the ins and outs of their writing project, putting them on track to create a compelling narrative.

Students will receive individualized instruction and group writing time. Students should pack a snack, water bottle and bring a notebook. HVWC’s space is air conditioned, and our HVAC system was upgraded in 2021 with the latest air filtering technology. Masks will be optional for this group. Please advise if there are any food allergies. Space is limited to ten students.

Instructor Misty Yarnall received her BFA in Creative Writing from Purchase College. Her work can be found in a handful of literary magazines, including Prime Number Magazine, The Roadrunner Review, KAIROS Literary Magazine, and The Merrimack Review. She holds awards in the Sixth Act Playwriting Competition and the POV Fest Screenwriting Contest. She has served as an apprentice and intern within the youth programming department at Writers & Books and is an active editing intern with DLG Publishing Partners.
