WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

MISSIVES: A Generative Poetry Craft Class with Safia Jama via Zoom

November 7, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Poems can be written, and read, as letters. The epistolary form is one way to put it, yes, but I prefer the term Missive, whose sound holds and delivers a certain longing to the ear. Something is unresolved that needs our attention. There is the hope of a response, but no guarantees. Let’s read letter-poems while employing the letter form as a lens for reading work that is both urgent and thrilling in its plea for a reply. We’ll read work by Emily Dickinson, Audre Lorde, and other luminaries before we dive into some writing exercises.

Join Safia Jama as she guides you through prompts and exercises to unlock your autumnal creative energy. NB: This class will be capped at 15 and taught on Zoom.

Safia Jama was born to a Somali father and an Irish American mother in Queens, New York. A Cave Canem graduate fellow, she has published poetry in Ploughshares, RHINO, Cagibi, Boston Review, Spoken Black Girl and No, Dear. Her poetry has also been featured on WNYC’s Morning Edition and CUNY TV’s Shades of US series. Jama is the author of Notes on Resilience, which was selected for the New-Generation African Poets chapbook box set series (Akashic Books, 2020).
