WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Writing the Sonnet in the 21st Century with Jason Schneiderman (via Zoom)

August 28 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

$124.00

What’s up with sonnets? Six centuries after its invention, it still has the power to beguile and fascinate, even as it keeps transforming in contemporary hands. We’ll spend the first hour discussing sonnets with a focus on the 21st Century sonnet, and then spend the rest of the class writing our own sonnets and sharing them.

This class will take place on Zoom. The link will be sent at the time of registration and again the day before class. Please write to [email protected] with questions.

Jason Schneiderman is the author of four books of poems: Hold Me Tight (Red Hen Press 2020), Primary Source (Red Hen Press 2016), winner of the Benjamin Saltman Prize; Striking Surface (Ashland Poetry Press 2010), winner of the Richard Snyder Prize, and Sublimation Point (Four Way Books 2004), a Stahlecker Selection. He edited the anthology Queer: A Reader for Writers (Oxford University Press 2015).

His poetry and essays have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including American Poetry Review, The Best American Poetry, Poetry London, Grand Street, The Penguin Book of the Sonnet, Story Quarterly, and Tin House. He has received fellowships from Yaddo, The Fine Arts Work Center, and The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, The Hermitage, and The Fulbright Foundation. He was the recipient of the Emily Dickinson Award from the Poetry Society of America in 2004, and the Jerome J. Shestack Prize in 2016. You can hear him on the podcast Painted Bride Quarterly Slush Pile, where he and the other editors discuss and vote on submissions for the magazine. He is an Associate Professor of English at the Borough of Manhattan Community College where he directs the Honors Program. He also teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College.
