WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Small Fires: Writing the Short Poem with Philip F. Clark (in person at HVWC)

August 28, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

$124.00

Hudson Valley Writers Workshop: In-Person Workshop — Sunday, August 28, 2022 12:30-4:30 pm

NB: This is an in-person workshop at HVWC in the Philipse Manor Train Station in Sleepy Hollow, NY. It will be capped at 10 students. All must show proof of vaccination to attend this class. Please read our class policies before signing up for a workshop.

In this workshop we will explore and practice the rich form of the short poem — which has a long history among many poets such as Rumi, Jean Valentine, C.P. Cavafy, Mark Strand, June Jordan, Emily Dickinson, and Sylvia Plath. The short poem contains much in a small space, and they can ignite larger meaning and power in your poetry, with specificity and concision. Short poems contain, in a small space, a rigorous tool for expansive expression. Together, we will write 4-6 poems in the class, which we will share and critique constructively, as well as read and examine some fine examples of the form.  Resources for potential publication will be offered, as well as a bibliography of works that represent a broad selection of the short poem genre. All levels of experience are welcome and encouraged.
