WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Great Speakers are Made, Not Born with Bill Buschel

May 31 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

$175
Who needs a class on how to become a better speaker? The obvious answer is EVERYONE. Whether you want to read your poems to friends, host a radio show, be a comedian, a teacher or just be more confident in a business meeting—better public speaking skills are necessary.
In the past: “Practice, practice, practice,” the answer to the old joke about how one gets to Carnegie Hall always seemed the best route to take. But practice, though terribly important, is only one ingredient that will help in making you a better speaker. Bill Buschel—after more than 25 years behind the microphone as the host of the radio program, Graffiti—and having given dozens of lectures, workshops, poetry and story readings—and hosting the Open Mic at the Hudson Valley Writers Center—is prepared to share the techniques he’s developed over the years to become a better public speaker.
Though a somewhat shortened version of his longer 10 hour, four week course, Bill will still take you from First Steps—manuscript writing and script preparation for public reading—through stage presence and presentation. Using techniques culled from the worlds of radio, poetry, acting, storytelling and juggling—yes, juggling—you’ll learn how to become a better public speaker and have fun doing it.
The two sessions will be a 4 hour session the first week followed by a 2 hour session the following week. All sessions will be held via Zoom. Expect to have work that must be done after class hours.
May 31: 12:30-4:30pm
