WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Writing a Thriller with Beth Hahn

September 10 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$320
Beth Hahn is one of HVWC’s most popular instructors. She is an engaged, generous teacher and she has an incredible track record of helping students get their work published.

Come learn the foundations about writing a thriller. In this class, we will examine the elements of the thriller, paying special attention to plot, suspense, point of view, and mood. We will read Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister, The Serial Killer, and use it as a touchstone to discuss craft. Each week, students will submit their writing for group discussion. Writers in all stages of their thriller projects are welcome–from original idea to penultimate draft.

Beth Hahn is the author of the novel THE SINGING BONE (Regan Arts, 2016). Her work has been published in CRAFT Literary, Necessary Fiction, and the UK’s Platypus Press Shorts series.

❖ Read the Kirkus review of THE SINGING BONE ❖

“A Girl Like You” (CRAFT, April 2018) is drawn from her new novel, A PERSON OF THE WORLD, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Beth attended the Ragdale Foundation, the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and has an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. She teaches Writing, Revising, and Publishing Short Fiction at The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

Beth is the daughter of the popular children’s author Mary Downing Hahn and the sister of the humor writer, Kate Hahn. Beth lives in Mount Kisco, New York, with her husband.

Beth Hahn’s fiction is represented by Jessica Papin of Dystel, Goderich, and Bourret.
