The Wide World: Translating Poetry, an ongoing monthly workshop with Sarah Arvio (via Zoom)
There is nothing so beautiful as transforming a poem from a foreign language into your own language. In this class we will work on translating poems from any language into English. We will work on texts already translated, so as to have a comparison text to consult. We will talk about voice, rhythm, style, tone, and diction level; we will learn the pleasure of perusing dictionaries and thesauruses. All skill levels are welcome.
This class will take place monthly on the following Sunday afternoons from 1-4:30pm EST:
Jan 8, Feb 5, March 5, April 2, and May 7 and June 4.

Sarah Arvio is the author of Cry Back My Sea (2021), night thoughts: 70 dream poems & notes from an analysis (2013), Sono: cantos (2006), and Visits from the Seventh (2002), for which she won the Rome Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. All four books were published by Alfred A. Knopf. Her translations of poems and a play by Federico García Lorca, Poet in Spain, was published by Knopf in 2017, to wide critical acclaim. Arvio is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Bogliasco Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has won prizes for her work from Boston Review, The Paris Review, and Poetry. For many years a translator for the United Nations, she has taught at Princeton and at Columbia’s School of the Arts. She lives in New York City.
