WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Writing for Young Readers with Nora Raleigh Baskin via Zoom

March 26 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$124.00

Writing for Young Readers Is NOT A Genre
(in fact, it’s the best school for learning to write)

In this workshop there will be a short introduction into several different writing skills such as, fact into fiction, POV, voice, theme, dialogue, and language after which students will write for 10-minutes based on the topic. Listening and responding to one another is where the organic learning happens. It can be quite magical.
Writing cannot truly be “taught” it needs to be written and shared.

This is a one-day Master Class taught on Zoom and capped at 12 students.

Nora Raleigh Baskin, a 2001 Publisher’s Weekly FLYING START, is the author of fifteen novels for young adults and a contributor to several short story collections. Her personal narrative essays have appeared in WRITER MAGAZINE, Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, and NCTE Voices From the Middle.  Her books have won several awards, including the 2010 American Library Association Schneider Family Book Award for Anything But Typical (S&S), and in 2016, an International Literacy Association Notable Books for a Global Society for Ruby on the Outside (S&S). Ms. Baskin has taught creative writing classes and workshops around the country for over twenty years in such places as Gotham Writers Workshop, Fairfield Co. Writers Studio, Manhattanville College, and S.U.N.Y Purchase.  Her newest MG novel, Consider the Octopus (co-authored with Gae Polisner) will be published (Henry Holt) April 2022.
