WELCOME TO THE HVWC CALENDAR: home of all our upcoming readings, events and workshops. You can view by list or calendar (see right menu to choose). Click the colored tabs below to show only specific options. Our workshops run as multi-session series or one-day “intensives.” Note, we list the multi-session courses on the first day they meet only. The full dates of the session are described in the course descriptions. You would need to scroll back to the start date if you needed to enroll for something already underway. But do let us know if you want to join something in midstream since we need the blessing of the instructor. Questions? Email us.

Creative Writing for Youth with Michael Collins

January 28 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$125

Please note: This class will continue through March 10, with a week off on Tuesday, February 18 to accommodate the holiday break.

This class, for 3rd to 5th graders, will serve as an energetic supplement to the traditional academic writing instruction of grammar and vocabulary development by providing a space in which young writers engage in open ended writing activities and encounter creative challenges that foster enjoyment of and enthusiasm for writing. Special focus will be given to supporting the imaginative elements of creative writing  in multiple genres that foster the flexible thinking necessary for communication and problem solving across the curriculum.

Michael Collins’ poems have received Pushcart Prize nominations and appeared in more than 70 journals and magazines.  He is also the author of the chapbooks How to Sing when People Cut off your Head and Leave it Floating in the Water and Harbor Mandala, the full-length collections Psalmandala and Appearances , which was named one of the best indie poetry collections of 2017 by Kirkus Reviews. He teaches creative and expository writing at New York University and the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center and is the Director of Studies at Why There Are Words Press and curator of the New York City branch of the national Why There Are Words Reading Series. Michael is the coordinator of outreach at HVWC and teaches at Children’s Village and the Life Center in Sleepy Hollow.
