Writers Express Youth Summer Programs

In Summer 2022, the Hudson Valley Writers Center launched the Writers Express Youth Summer Programs to foster creativity and excitement for students ages 8-18. Our name Writers Express comes from our unique Philipse Manor Train Station venue, as well as our mission to encourage participants to express themselves through the literary arts.

Our week-long camps are a great home for any budding writer, reading enthusiast, or imaginative artist. We aim to encourage students to be their truest selves and showcase their ideas though the written word. Come join us this summer in building a creative community.

Registration for 2024 camps will open in March 2024.

Writers Express Spring Break Camps

The Blueprint of Magic: Basics in Screenwriting (Grades 5-8)
March 26-29
Film and television are collaborative efforts that take many people to bring to life, but the magic always begins with the script, the written story that serves as the blueprint for the entire cinematic piece. In this workshop, students will learn the basic technical and structural rules of screenwriting, as well as lessons in genre before writing then revising their own short film scripts. Students may choose to work collaboratively or individually.

Playwriting Basics (Grades 5-8)
March 26-29
Participants will learn how to write their own 10-minute play over the course of the week. The class also includes some art, improv, acting, play reading, brainstorming, idea building, establishing setting and tone, structure, creating character profiles, and of course writing! The last class ends with a staged reading of the students’ work.
