Days of Wonder: Reading and Writing the Ecstatic: A Poetry Workshop with Michael Klein (Zoom)

This course meets 6 Sundays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. (ET) on Zoom on October 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15, and 22.

This reading-intensive, writing-focused poetry workshop will look at matters of transcendence—however we may define the human mechanism at work when when we face huge joy or huge dread in this world and in the world of the psyche. How do we, as writers, face that kind of work that is at once essential and complex in an intimate and personal way? What does it mean for the length of that particular work? We will look at both long-ish poems and short poems to see how breadth or a compressed sensibility necessitates a deliberate and measured way of taking in the world. Readings will include Louise Glück, Jack Gilbert, Lucille Clifton, Gerald Stern, Nazim Hikmet, Franz Wright, Jean Valentine, and others.
