About the event

Poets have made poems from lists for a long time—lists of things, actions, metaphors, traits, titles, reasons, people, places. They’ve also used the alphabet, or numbers, or even the shopping list and to-do list of ordinary life to structure poems. The first hour of this four-hour workshop will be spent discussing published poems that use lists, focusing not only on different kinds of lists, but also on strategies such as repetition, order, shifts, digressions. The last three hours will be spent in careful discussion of your own poems (which may or may not involve or include lists: your choice). Please e-mail a copy of a one-page poem you’re not yet satisfied with to martha.collins@oberlin.edu by noon on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
