Masterpieces in the Art Institute of Chicago: Ekphrastic Reading and Writing with David Raskin (Zoom))

This two-hour intensive examines poems inspired by paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago in order to expand our own ekphrastic practices. We will read and discuss old favorites such as Edward Hirsch on Chardin’s “The White Tablecloth,” Joyce Carol Oates on Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks,” Taylor Byas on Picasso’s “The Red Armchair,” and Robert Hayden on Monet’s “Waterlilies.” We will devote the second part of class to our own writing, prompted by yet another amazing work of art.

David Raskin, Ph.D., is the Mohn Family Professor of Contemporary Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he teaches art history and ekphrastic writing. He has attended the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and Kenyon Review Writers Workshops.
