Every narrative moves through time—whether it’s a micro-narrative of one minute or a multi-generational epic spanning centuries. But on the page, writers are not limited by our mundane mortal timeline, moving inexorably in only one direction. In fiction, we can use flashbacks, parallel timelines, simultaneous timelines, recurrent or recursive timelines and many other devices to layer our stories and create more complex effects.
