About the event

Gaston Bachelard writes that “Two kinds of space, intimate space and exterior space, keep encouraging each other…in their growth.”  Too often critics privilege plotting as the foremost concern of the fiction writer. In this workshop, we’ll focus our attention on setting, or “story world” as John Truby describes it in his The Anatomy of Story. We’ll explore how writers in different fictional genres create these visual worlds and how these unique settings can help various story elements like character, plot, theme, and dialogue.


Ian S. Maloney is the author of South Brooklyn Exterminating (Spuyten Duyvil Publishing, 2024). Ian grew up in Marine Park, Brooklyn, where he worked as a NYS Pest Control Technician. He received his PhD. From the CUNY Graduate Center and is a former Professor of Literature, Writing, and Publishing at St. Francis College. Now, he serves as Director of the Jack Hazard Fellowships at New Literary Project…
