Sleepy Hollow Show & Tell

These are a few of my favorite things...
In previous iterations of the Show & Tell that comes about every six months to a location in the 10591, audiences have met:
the model train made of intricately braided human hair as a gift to Jay Gould of Lyndhurst Mansion
the handwritten love letters found in the renovation rubble of Sleepy Hollow Trustee Jared Rodriguez' inner village house, with the sender in the early 1900s declaring so romantically on the envelope "postman postman do not tarry, this is the girl I am going to marry"
the unwieldy beheaded top of a marble torso that became known as Ichabod when it sprung from the earth of North Tarrytown and has since been schlepped around by its adopter
and the myriad everyday yet extraordinary treasures cited in an article about the event in the Hudson Independent by writer Sue Treiman: "A coffee cup, a goofy winter hat, squishy toys, and a shiny pendant may seem like unremarkable objects. To their owners, though, each is a treasured talisman marking a cherished moment, a departed soul, or an enduring connection."
These things people bring to share (for a mere five minutes each) are often reverberating with a special sort of energy, but the truth is, as writers, readers. and listeners we know: it's all in the telling. Any object at all will astound if the owner carries that feeling to the audience with their words and authenticity.
I consider this series our version of adult kindergarten, yet another way to come together and reconnect when the world feels so crazy and broken, an anecdote to our epidemic of loneliness, an open mic with the bonus of stuff to structure the story. The simple yet often profound tales delight and dismay. We laugh together and sometimes get choked up with this revelation of the oddity of our human experiences. Being alive together in all its weirdness becomes a shared experience on these wonderful occasions.
Please grab something to talk about and come join us (or just come listen) for the next event May 28 at the HVWC.
