Dear HVWC Community,
Happy June! I wanted to send you a special note this month so that some of our exciting opportunities do not get lost in the shuffle. I hope you’ve been discovering our major literary and performance event, The Word at 250, and that you will join us—either in-person or via livestream—on June 18. We can’t wait to see you! In addition, however, here are 3 important HVWC programs to put on your calendars:
Summer Publishing Series
2026 marks the third year of our annual Summer Publishing Series. No matter if you’re new to publishing your work or if you’re the author of multiple books, we are lucky to be joined by publishers, editors, and agents who can offer invaluable industry advice and who can answer some of your questions. This summer, check out sessions on book marketing, shaping a literary pitch, finding the right markets for your work, and navigating submission platforms, the rewarding and multi-faceted writer-publisher relationship, and advice on breaking into digital outlets. If you are a college or university student, we’d love to make the series even more accessible for you. Please email dominika@writerscenter.org from your school email and let me know which sessions you’d like to attend at a discounted rate. Everyone can join us for one session, or you can invest in your writing by purchasing the entire series at a discount.
Summer Publishing Series (Available as individual sessions [$75] or in its entirety [$325])
DIY Marketing for Authors (June 16) Diane Goettel
FROM MANUSCRIPT to SUCCESSFUL PITCH: A Literary Agent’s Perspective (June 23) Gina Maccoby
Hit Send: The Art of Submitting Your Work (June 30) Meg Toth
The Writer-Publisher Relationship (July 7) Carey Salerno
Finding Your Digital Writing Voice (July 14) Chris L. Vaughan
Scholarships
HVWC accepts scholarship applications twice a year—once in December, and then again in May/June. During these open periods, if our class fees present a barrier to your participation,
we encourage you to apply for a need-based scholarship. We accept applications for intensives, multi-week classes, or for special lectures (like the Summer Publishing Series). We are always navigating a changing grant funding landscape—like most non-profit organizations—but we are committed to awarding as many scholarships as we can for the May/June period. Scholarship applications will close on June 15 and can be accessed via our Submittable portal. Please send us your applications!
Residency Reading
June 2025 saw HVWC host its first-ever writing residency in partnership with the Rockefeller
Brothers Fund’s Pocantico Center. 16 poets and writers, and 4 award-winning faculty members, joined us on the gorgeous grounds of Pocantico for the week-long residency. As we gear up for the 2027 residency, we are hosting a virtual Residency Reunion Weekend! The cohort of writers will reunite with each other and the faculty to enjoy generative writing workshops this weekend (June 6 & 7). The weekend will culminate in a pay-what-can virtual reading of prose and poetry that is open to the public! Please join us on Sunday, June 7, at 4:00 p.m. ET, to celebrate the many accomplishments of our residency cohort and to get all of the details on next year’s application process.
Thank you for supporting HVWC’s year-round programming. I hope to see you in person or online at one of our summer events!
